I contain multitudes

August 12, 2013

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes.” -Walt Whitman

Maybe it hasn’t happened yet, but eventually I will say something that contradicts what I have said before, something that is hypocritical to what I purport to believe. And you know what?

I don’t care.

People change, and ideas change with them. What politicians call flip-flopping is for the rest of us known as “changing our minds”. And who’s to say we can’t maintain contradictory opinions and beliefs? It seems to me that the “logical” human is a fantasy. It would be nice, but none of us are absolutely consistent. None of us.

I will try, of course, especially in my writing, where consistency is valuable to the storytelling process, and where I can control the entire setting to make it more possible. Here in the real world though, I’ll bend with the times, and contradict myself when necessary. For I too contain multitudes, and that’s all right.
